Wedding Menu for 300,
500 & 1,000 Guests

"How many dishes do we need?" is the first question almost every family asks us. Too few, and the menu feels thin. Too many, and quality, temperature and service suffer. Here is how we plan a wedding menu for 300, 500 and 1,000 guests, based on more than 35 years of Ahmedabad weddings.

Planning the Service, Not Just the Food

For larger weddings, how the food is served matters as much as what's on the menu:

6 Steps to Select Your Wedding Menu

  1. Know your guests: the mix of elders, Jain guests, children and out-of-town guests.
  2. Plan by function: Mehendi, Sangeet, wedding and reception should each feel different.
  3. Choose 3–5 highlights: the counters or dishes you want people to remember. See trending wedding food items.
  4. Keep the base classic: dal, rice, breads and a Gujarati thali side that everyone enjoys. See the Gujarati wedding menu list.
  5. Match the season: undhiyu and thandai in winter, aam ras and coolers in summer.
  6. Taste before you finalise: adjust spice levels and swap dishes at a tasting.

✨ Budget tip: Spending on 2–3 excellent live counters creates more impact than adding a fourth sabji. For package contents and pricing, see Catering Costs in Ahmedabad.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many items should be on a wedding menu for 500 guests?

Typically around 14–18 items for 500 guests: 2–3 drinks, 2 soups, 3 starters, 3–4 live counters, 2 farsan, 3 main-course dishes, 3 breads, dal, kadhi and rice, 3 sweets and a dessert counter.

How many live counters do I need for 1,000 guests?

Usually 5 or more, spread across the venue, including at least one dessert counter, so queues stay short.

How many starters, main-course dishes and desserts should a wedding have?

As a guide: 2–4 starters, 2–4 main-course dishes and 2–4 sweets depending on guest count, plus one or two dessert counters for larger weddings.

How many waiters are needed for a wedding of 500 guests?

We plan about one trained service staff member for every 25–30 guests, so roughly 17–20 staff for 500 guests, plus a floor captain.

How do I select the perfect wedding menu?

Start with your guest profile, plan each function separately, choose 3–5 highlight items, keep the base menu classic, match the season, and finalise after a tasting.
